Back to the top: Manchester City snap up Nathan Ake

Manchester City are having fun this window! Having just signed £20 million attacker Ferran Torres, the Blues have continued their summer spending having announced a £41 million deal for ex Bournemouth and Chelsea defender Nathan Ake, who’s deal runs until 2025.

Ake, a versatile left-footed defender has been courted by many clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea who did have the opportunity to match City’s bid, but City won the race as they seek to bolster their options after a tough year in defence. Whilst he’s not expected to be the only central defensive signing Pep Guardiola makes this summer, the Dutchman’s role at his new club is a unique one. Being homegrown due to his spending his formative years at Chelsea and being capable of playing centre back, left back and even as a holding midfielder, Ake has all the qualities to match Guardiola’s style and demands he places on his squad.

Whilst Bournemouth were relegated this summer, the seasons Ake has been at Bournemouth have all been in the Premier League and he has consistently been their stand out player since joining the Cherries permanently in 2017. In his first two seasons since the transfer, he played every single league game, and only missed nine games in 2019/20. His clean injury record is a massive benefit to Manchester City and for all their struggles keeping first-choice left back Benjamin Mendy fit, as well as left-footed centre back Aymeric Laporte having missed months through a knee injury this past season, City’s newest acquisition can from day one begin a fight for these positions and assert himself as a first team regular.

City fans will herald this as an important signing, providing cover that Guardiola has obviously been desperate for in the past year since failing to replace Vincent Kompany last summer. A quick, strong defender with plenty of leadership potential, the Dutchman is exactly what Manchester City are looking for from their central defensive buys this summer and it is widely reported Ake won’t be the only one. With over six weeks until the Premier League starts back, he stands a real chance of making early impressions on new manager Pep Guardiola and upon joining the club, the new City man had this to say on his manager;
“Pep is a manager admired across the world – what he’s done in the game speaks for itself. The success he’s had is unbelievable and the style of football he plays really appeals to me.”

Having recently got engaged on a holiday between leaving Bournemouth and joining City, it is obvious Ake is another grounded and humble family-focused young man who does want to strive for success, even if he is competing against some of the best players in their positions for a place in the first XI, something the defender made reference to in his first interview as a Manchester City player
“I know I’m going to have to work hard to get into the side, but that’s what I’m here to do. I’ll do whatever I can to make an impact and help the team win silverware.”

This will be music to City fans’ ears, as central defensive errors have arguably cost them a second retaining of the Premier League title, and departures are expected from the Etihad later in the summer. As previously mentioned, Ake was courted by other clubs including Manchester United to the point where after a recent fixture between the Trafford based club and Bournemouth, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took Ake aside and hinted at a potential transfer to the player, both laughed in response, but the player was well known to the Etihad hierarchy and the player will now spend time settling into his new surroundings. A positive new era awaits both City and player.

Welcome to Manchester City, Nathan Ake!
